We have all had those days where the ideas in our head just are not coming out correctly, haven’t we? We know what we want to say, we just either can’t figure out how to say it, or we say it and it comes out incorrectly. Often times, it is due to the barriers in our communication.
One-Size-Fits-All. Or Does It?
If it doesn’t work in the fashion industry, it probably isn’t going to work in communication either. In retail, people come in beautifully different shapes and sizes. In the same way, the mind is created so differently per individual. People learn in different ways. Try to find a way to tailor to those needs. Whether that may be to your employees, your students, your co-workers, your friends, your athletes, your students, whoever it may be, there is always a need to customize your communication.
Non-Verbal Cues
93% of our communication is non-verbal. Wow! That is split down into two main categories, body language and tone of voice. Often times, the barrier arises when the communicator is not reading those non-verbal cues and adjusting to them. Be conscious in your communication, be aware of those cues.
Attention
Lack of attention is a major barrier for many people in our world today. We want to multitask and quickly move from one topic to the next, because there are other things that need to get done. However, it is so important to just focus attentively on what is at hand. What are you trying to communicate? Who are you trying to communicate to? How can you effectively and efficiently do that? Pay attention.
Understanding some barriers in communication is important. In addition to that, learning how to address those barriers is also important.
